Access to the Claude Moore Colonial Farm
On July 22, 2002, Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) in McLean,
VA, changed security procedures to better control access to or through
the Federally-owned and operated Turner-Fairbank Highway Research
Center (TFHRC). The Turner-Fairbank facility set new procedures as
a step toward reaching the directive of enhancing security
procedures, given to Federal agencies.
These procedures will affect all visitors to the TFHRC, and vehicular
traffic to the Claude Moore Colonial Farm (Farm) administrative building
parking area. The Farm, located on National Park Service (Park Service)
property, is adjacent to TFHRC; vehicular access to the Farm's administrative
parking lot is through the TFHRC. Visitors to the Farm who park
in the public lot off Colonial Farm Road are unaffected by the new
procedures.
FHWA, the National Park Service, and the Farm agreed to construct
a new road that will provide visitors with independent access to the
Farm and its administrative building parking lot, and eliminate the
current security procedures for Farm visitors.
FHWA completed a design for the new road, which will be funded by
the National Park Service. After the Park Service completes the environmental
review around September 1, 2002, the FHWA expects to initiate construction
of the new road.
FHWA will allow unescorted access through the TFHRC facility to Farm
paid staff and volunteers, who work at the Farm three (3) or more
days a week until completion of the road construction. Other volunteers
or occasional visitors will receive access between the security gate
and the Farm parking lot, if the Farm supplies an escort. When the
Farm is unable to provide an escort, visitors must park in the Farm's
Public Parking Lot located outside the TFHRC facility and walk to
the administrative buildings via the Farm path.
